Tachlis” borrows its name from the yiddish word for “nuts and bolts” - used in context, it means “the essence of something…broken down to its essential parts”. Here, the tachlis of my Jewish identity include both traditionally Jewish items, like Challah bread and matzo ball soup, and more personal items, like my grandmother’s fridge from my childhood or the setup of a mahjong game. I wanted to combine elements of Judaism that generations of my family are familiar with, and arrange them in a way that tell the story of those generations.
